The first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament was one of the most exciting in history, producing a record four one-point games on the opening day of the tourney alone. There was upsets and closer-than-expected scores across the country, resulting in millions of people succumbing to the Madness of the season. Of course, that Madness also caused those same fans to crumble up their brackets and toss them in the trash, as perfection evaporated quickly.
But we still have plenty of tournament left to be played, as 32 teams are still alive in the chase for a championship. In picking winners of the second round games, we're not going by a team's prowess on the court, but rather the main attraction off it - the mascots.
Heck, picking winners based on mascots can't be worse than some of your brackets out there, right? Our Saturday matchups are below, with our Sunday games posted soon after. Check out our first round breakdown here. Enjoy and let us know in the comments section which mascot should rule all this March.
No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats
vs. No. 8 Cincinnati Bearcats
It's Cat vs. Cat. In this case, however, the Wildcat is a fierce animal, while a Bearcat is considered a cuddly Panda. No contest.
No. 6 Butler Bulldogs
vs. No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Winner: Fighting Irish
The Irish are dog-loving people, but the Butler (English) Bulldogs will cause any Irishman to fight. And fight forever.
No. 5 Arkansas Razorbacks
vs. No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels are no match for the rough, merciless fighting of the Razorback.
No. 6 Xavier Musketeers (Blue Blob)
vs. No. 14 Georgia State Panthers
Armed and ready, the Musketeers have their eyes set on the Panthers.
No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes
vs. No. 2 Arizona Wildcats
Wildcats prefer to eat meat, but will enjoy the lovely vegetarian meal of Buckeyes.
No. 1 Villanova Wildcats
vs. No. 8 NC State Wolfpack
Wildcats look better on paper, not in real life. Please refer to Law No. 1 from our first round picks: Dogs always beat Cats.
No. 14 UAB Blazers
vs. No. 11 UCLA Bruins
Local Brazillan Steak House is serving fricasseed Bear on special tonight! Reservations begin 30 minutes after finish.
No. 5 Utah Utes (Swoop)
vs. No. 4 Georgetown Hoyas
The Bulldog is sturdy, but slow, and in this case, won't have a chance to beat the fast and furious red-tailed Hawk that is named Swoop.
