Say what you will about Ohio State and Michigan or Auburn and Alabama or Oklahoma and Texas, Army and Navy make up the greatest rivalry in college football and perhaps in all of sports. Nothing compares to what that game displays each and every year, which fittingly has recently been given the college football spotlight all to itself to end the regular season.
This year's matchup will take place in Baltimore Saturday afternoon, with Navy in the familiar role of late as big favorites to its rival.
The Midshipmen are 6-5 overall and have won four of their last five games, the only loss coming to Notre Dame. As usual, Navy is one of the top rushing teams in the nation, averaging 357.8 yards per game on the ground, which is second best. The Mids average 34.5 points per game, but allow 29.9 points per game on defense in this uneven season.
Army is 4-7 overall and did win its last game, although it was against Fordham, a Division I-AA school. The Black Knights have wins over Buffalo, Ball State and UConn this season. Not surprisingly, this year's version of Army runs the ball as well, averaging 305.5 yards per game, good enough for sixth best in the nation. The Knights have trouble scoring, however, averaging just 26.3 points per game. Defense has been a problem as well, as Army allows 34.4 points a game.
Of course, when Army and Navy play, records and stats don't mean much, as each player and coach wants to win this game more than any other they will play all season long.
Fans will be divided, with most of the time family members throughout history deciding for you who you must root for. Army? Navy? We have our picks. Who are you rooting for? Follow us on Twitter for all of our college football analysis and bowl picks.
